ABOUT US

We started DogTrainingK9 because we believe that well-trained dogs and confident owners go hand in hand. Our trainers have hands-on experience working with high-drive breeds — including German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, and Dobermans — in everything from basic obedience to protection sport and service work.

We're based in the Los Angeles area and travel throughout Southern California. Our approach is practical: we teach dogs to behave in real life, not just during a structured lesson. That means we train in neighborhoods, parks, busy environments — wherever your dog actually needs to perform.

If your dog has aggression issues, reactivity on leash, or just needs solid foundation skills, we can help. We don't believe in one-size-fits-all programs, and we'll be straight with you about what your dog needs and how long it'll take.

THE HISTORY OF THE WORKING DOG

Working dogs have been alongside humans for thousands of years — not as pets, but as partners. German Shepherds were originally bred in 19th-century Germany to herd and protect livestock in all weather conditions. Belgian Malinois were developed in Belgium as tireless, highly intelligent herding dogs that could also serve alongside police and military units.

Understanding where these breeds come from changes how you train them. A dog built for twelve hours of outdoor work will not simply settle into a quiet apartment without a plan. Our approach to K9 training is rooted in that reality — we give these dogs the structure, mental stimulation, and physical outlets they were bred for, and in return, they become steady, manageable companions.

Did you know?

Max von Stephanitz, who developed the German Shepherd breed in 1899, insisted that utility and intelligence were the only meaningful breeding standards — a philosophy that still shapes how we evaluate and train working dogs today.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

"Research suggests that working dogs like German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois have the problem-solving ability of a 2–3 year old child. That level of intelligence needs consistent mental engagement — without it, behavioral problems almost always follow."

READING YOUR DOG: BODY LANGUAGE MATTERS

Most dog owners are surprised to learn how much their own body language affects their dog's behavior. Dogs don't process words the way we do — they read posture, movement, eye contact, and tension with remarkable precision. Once you understand that, everything about handling and training starts to click.

In our training sessions, we teach owners how to spot early stress signals, engagement cues, and displacement behaviors before they escalate. This is especially important when working with reactive or aggressive dogs — where the difference between a manageable moment and a full reaction often comes down to what the handler did five seconds earlier. The same skills that prevent problems also build the deep, working trust that service dogs and high-drive K9s need to perform reliably.

FEEDING YOUR WORKING DOG RIGHT

Training results don't happen in a vacuum. A dog that's underfed, eating low-quality food, or dealing with gut issues will have shorter attention spans, lower drive, and slower recovery between sessions. We include nutrition guidance as part of every program because we've seen firsthand how much it matters — especially for high-output breeds like German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois.

We're not nutritionists, but we know what works in practice. Good protein sources, appropriate fat levels, and meal timing around training sessions make a measurable difference in how a dog shows up to work. Beyond food, we also talk about rest, decompression time, and mental enrichment — because a tired dog that can't decompress properly isn't learning at full capacity during your training sessions.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What kinds of dogs do you work with?

We work with all breeds, but we specialize in high-drive working breeds — primarily German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, and Dobermans. We also have experience with dogs that have behavioral issues like reactivity, fear-based aggression, and resource guarding.

Do you come to us, or do we come to you?

We offer mobile training sessions throughout the Los Angeles area, including Glendale, Burbank, Studio City, Pasadena, and surrounding cities. We can train at your home, a local park, or in environments that are relevant to your dog's specific challenges.

Can any dog become a service dog?

Not every dog is a good candidate for service work, and we'll be honest with you about that from the start. The best service dogs have stable temperaments, solid food and play drive, and the ability to focus in stressful environments. We assess each dog individually before recommending a service dog program.

Do you offer board-and-train programs?

Yes. Our board-and-train option places your dog with one of our trainers for an intensive, immersive training period. It's a great fit for busy owners or dogs that need consistent daily structure to make real progress. We follow up with handler transition sessions so the results carry over to you at home.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY

★★★★★

"Our German Shepherd was completely unmanageable on the leash — pulling, barking at everything, impossible to walk in our Glendale neighborhood. After working with DogTrainingK9 for six weeks, the difference is night and day. He walks calmly past other dogs and actually listens now."

John D. German Shepherd Owner, Glendale
★★★★★

"I got a Belgian Malinois thinking I could handle it — I was wrong. These guys understood the breed immediately and helped me build a real working relationship with her. The service dog prep program was thorough, patient, and genuinely effective. Best investment I've made for her."

Sarah M. Service Dog Handler, Studio City
★★★★★

"We did the board-and-train with our reactive Doberman and honestly didn't know what to expect. Two weeks later they showed us a completely different dog — not broken or subdued, just calm and clear about what's expected. The transition sessions they did with us afterward made all the difference."
